The Dalmatian School recently organized the conference “Dalmatia in Italian literature yesterday and today”, which was held in Venice at the Tommaseo Hall in the Ateneo Veneto on the 9th of November 2016. The conference’s keynote speakers were Aldo Sigovini, Grand Guardian of the Dalmatian School, Professor Adriana Ivanov, Professor Carmen Sari and Professor Giorgio Baroni of the Faculty of Education at the Catholic University of Milan. The conference saw a thorough presentation regarding the role of Dalmatian writers in Italian literature from the nineteenth century until today, themes which had been discussed in a similar conference held in Trieste in 2013.

CONVOCATO GENERALE

Every year, generally in June, the assembly of the confreres of the Dalmatian School meets; not a few those from various Italian cities.

During the General Convocation - preceded by the solemn Mass - the Chancellery Council, renewed every three years:

· Report on the activities carried out during the year,

· Illustrates projects for the future,

· Presents the administrative report.

The debate then opens.

At the end of the Conference, a convivial meal follows, which is an opportunity to exchange opinions and strengthen friendships among the Dalmatian confreres of the School.

sensa-03

THE “SENSA” CEREMONY (the Wedding with the Sea) is a celebration in which the entire city relives the history of the thousand-year-long Venetian Republic, particularly with regards to the city’s intimate relationship with the sea. The ceremony commemorates an event that took place on the 9th of March in the year 1000, when the Doge Pietro Orseolo the Second rescued the people of Istria and Dalmatia from its enemies.

For the Venetian Republic, the date recalls three important facts:

-          When all the cities of Istria and Dalmatia freely adhered to Venetian dominion

-          The recognition of the Doge as Duke of Dalmatia

-          The end of the raids of the Narentine pirates

A large ceremonial procession of sea vessels departs from Saint Mark’s Bay and completes its journey at the mouth of the port. A ring is then thrown in the Adriatic Sea to symbolically wed the city to the sea. The wedding is then “consecrated” by a solemn Mass that takes place in the church of Saint Nicholas on Lido island.
